If you’ve ever heard the saying that “there’s no hero without scars,” then you know that it’s also true for your carpet. After laying out your carpet and arranging furniture and other heavy stuff, the carpet takes the stress in silence. You’ll rarely notice the dents until you decide to rearrange your furniture. Basically, your carpet has been a silent hero with its scars to show.
Just as no one likes a reminder of stress, seeing your carpet riddled with dents can be quite upsetting. Why? The dents are disfiguring, and they also threaten the durability of your carpet.
5 Simple Ways to Fix Carpet Dents
Removing dents from your carpet doesn’t require special skills or tools. With typical home equipment such as a vacuum, pressing iron, or a blow dryer, you can restore your carpet to its beautiful and balanced outlook. Here are five ways to take to fix carpet dents:
· Vacuuming
Using a vacuum cleaner on your carpet is one of the easiest ways to fix carpet dents. All you need is your vacuum cleaner and a spray bottle – note that the spray bottle isn’t compulsory.
To get started, loosen up the matted carpet fibers in the dented area. Use your fingers, a broom, or water spray to loosen up the fibers. Your best bet would be first to spray the area with a bit of water to loosen the bond between the matted fibers, then use your fingers to brush against them. Once you’ve done this, place your vacuum’s hose slightly above the dented area and the region around it. Using your vacuum suction, draw out the dented fibers until they’re standing straight and at equal length with the surrounding fibers. Note that this method is only efficient for less stubborn carpet dents.
· Hair Dryer – Blow It Out
If vacuuming doesn’t work well, you can try this step to improve the result. You’ll need a typical hair dryer and a water spray bottle. As usual, spray the affected area with enough water. The idea is to allow the water to soak up and loosen the matted fibers. Then set your hair dryer to the hottest setting and place it slightly above the dented area. Ensure that you give a 4 – 6 inches space between the hair dryer’s nozzle and the carpet surface. This way, you’ll be able to blow dry the carpet without the risk of burning it. While drying the carpet, occasionally use your fingers to ruffle the dented fibers so that they’ll straighten back up. The idea behind using a hair dryer is that it’ll work for your carpet just as much as it can fix your hair from being matted and flat.
· Steaming with a Pressing Iron
In the absence of a vacuum or hair dryer, or you’ve not been able to get the desired result after using both the vacuum and hair dryer, it’s time to apply more heat. This method requires you to use a pressing iron to steam away the dents in your carpet. Get a pressing iron and allow it to heat up for a while. Soak a piece of cloth – preferably cotton, in water and squeeze out the excess. Once you’re done squeezing out the excess water, place the cloth on the dented area.
With your pressing iron on medium heat, place the pressing iron slightly above the dented area that’s covered with the wet cloth, and wait for a while. Rather than the dry heating process done with a hair dryer, this one combines steam and water. The combination of heat and water would easily loosen up tough dents. Note that you’re not ironing your carpet – you’re only steaming. After a while, use a brush to roughen or straighten the dented fibers on your carpet, and that’s all.
· Use Ice Cubes
By now, you’d have noticed that virtually every method to remove dents from your carpet involves spraying water on the affected area. That’s because water is effective in loosening the matted fibers. When the fibers absorb moisture, they tend to swell and can be easily returned to their normal shape by brushing them.
In this method, too, you’ll need to place ice cubes on the dented areas and wait. Once the ice cubes melt completely, clean off the excess water, and then use a brush, your fingers, or even a fork to brush against the affected fibers. This method is ideal for thick carpets that can properly absorb moisture.
· When All Else Fails, Hire a Professional
The last and simplest way to fix dents on your carpet is to hire carpet cleaning and maintenance professionals.
