How to Sort Out a Water Stain on Your Sofa

In Blog, Tips by Oyebode Racheal

The sofa is the go-to spot for lounging in the living room. It’s long and comfy, which makes it perfect for stretching out. But then, there’s the issue of spilling water on the sofa. While it may initially seem harmless, and you can quickly brush off the water, it’ll take a few days before you notice the real effect. If your sofa doesn’t start stinking, you’ll see ugly brown stains scattered across where the water touched.

To ward off water stains on your sofa, it’s easy to say that you’ll avoid drinking water or any liquid around the sofa. But that’ll quickly turn out to be futile. It’s either you forget, or someone else spills water. So, rather than trying to avoid spilling water on your sofa – which is great, it’s better you know how to sort out a water stain on your sofa. It’s not just about brushing off the water.

Why Should You Clean Out Water Spills and Stains Quickly

Water stains result from spilled water drying up on your sofa. Depending on the fabric your sofa is made of, the stains can either be terrible or mild. Either way, water spills, and absorption determine the stain you’ll find on your couch. If the fabric for your sofa is breathable, then there’s a high chance that it’ll absorb spilled water quickly – which will lead to stains and stench. If your sofa is thick and rubbery, it’s unlikely that spilled water will be absorbed – unless the water was too much and wasn’t cleaned off until it dried on the sofa. In this case, the stain would be noticeably bad.

An unsightly image of your sofa isn’t all there is to a water stain. Consistent water spills and stains are harmful to your sofa’s fabric. Certain sofa fabrics are susceptible to wearing out a lot faster if they suffer from constant water spills that dry out and leave stains. They get stiff and susceptible to tears – especially when you finally decide to clean out the stain after a long while. What’s more, water spills are a breeding ground for dirt and mold – where the stench and stain come from. You must clean out water spills and stains as quickly as possible. Your best bet would be to clean off water spills to prevent stains, and if there are already, clean them as soon as possible – just do it now.

4 Steps to Clean Out Water Stains From Your Sofa

Cleaning out water stains is a short and simple exercise that shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes. Before you start cleaning out water stains from your sofa, it’s best to figure out what fabric your sofa is made of and the appropriate cleaning agent to use. Some fabrics require mild cleaning solutions, and there are others in which you only need water to clean out stains.

Here are four steps to follow in cleaning out water stains from your sofa:

1.     Do A Preliminary Clean Up

Scrub the stained area on your sofa with a clean and slightly wet cloth. Chances are that a preliminary clean might clear the stain. But the main idea is to loosen dried stains before applying a cleaning solution.

2.     Soak and Scrub

Remember, to avoid damaging your sofa fabric, use a cleaning solution that’s appropriate for the fabric. If unsure, you can simply use water or a mild cleaning solution.

Soak your cleaning cloth into a mix of water and cleaning solution, and allow it to soak for about 2 minutes. Afterward, squeeze out excess liquid from the cloth, and begin your cleaning. Scrub from the outer edges of the stain, and gradually work your way in circles inwards. Dip the cloth into the mix and repeat the scrubbing until the stain is almost clear.

3.     Clean Up

After scrubbing, the stain would have cleared completely. However, you need to dip a different clean cloth in clean water, squeeze out excess water until the cloth is damp, and then use it to finalize your cleaning. At this point, the stain would be totally clear. Think of it like rinsing after washing.

4.     Allow to Dry

You can either allow your sofa to dry by itself or use a hair dryer to hasten the process. When using a hair dryer, set it to cool air mode – this is a little closer to the natural air and won’t risk damaging your fabric.
